A is for Attitude that governs (my) 2024.
As you are aware by now, it's about observations for yours truly. Keeping my eyes open, eavesdropping and generally trying to look inconspicuous as I stare is what I can say hand-on-heart motivates me to understand the world. 2024 started with a nice glass of bubbly amongst a lovely group of friends as we watched the fireworks on the telly. Thanking my lucky stars I made it through what I considered 2023 to be an ‘annus horribilis’ year (although there were some great moments, like meeting new people and being able to realign and reverse priorities) generally speaking, wars, inflation, high-interest rates, bullying, not enough time to read and weather patterns resembling Armageddon meant that 2024 couldn’t come soon enough. January first welcomed an attitudinal change. While I don’t have a crystal ball to predict any future, there have been some (funny) observations of late that I believe will perhaps influence some key elements that I'll interpret as a benchmark moving forward.
There is a comeback for personalisation.
This has been noted in the first instance with the rise of (or return of) the rubber croc. (hmm, not sure what I think of adults wearing them outside the back yard.) They did disappear for a while, but in the last few weeks, I’ve noticed many individuals of all ages re-introducing the rubber sandal in all its colour pallet. What the main difference noted is the addition of the personalised Jibbitzä that cover the entire shoe. Not just one, but each air hole is now contested real estate which aims to tell the world one step at a time, the owners foot persona like no other.
“I bought all my barbie charms with my savings money, and each one says a little of the things I like. I like pink, I like ice cream and I like donuts sprinkled with hundreds and thousands. I know what I like.” Melissa. Aged 8.
I still laugh at the croc, but wonder why they are everywhere.
Blue
(All shades from navy, midnight to Curillin) together with hues of the lilac, purple and moonshine type are gracing nail salons across the country and visiting my nail salon is one of my little idiosyncrasies. I like when nails are shaped and polished to a shine. Think Pantone 2738. Blue is known to signify serenity, wisdom and inspiration. Perhaps that’s why we are seeing ocean and sky shades appearing in bridesmaids dresses, glass tumblers, mobile phone cases, handbags and while I may be a year ahead, according to Architectural Digest, ‘Future Dusk’ a mix of dark blue and purple – is predicted to be 2025 colour of the year. You heard it here first.
Pretentious is out, being cool (at the club as just one example) is in.
Let’s say sayonara to the mean girls, the wannabe Tate’s and everyone that resembles a carbon copy of the unobtainable in every aspect of life. Ageism can kiss my arse and all those folks who dance to their own beat, I applaud you. If you are in Sydney, two very very new cool places, that welcomes individualism is the Trocadero club in Enmore and the Caterpillar Club in Sydney’s CBD. I can confidently say that at both venues a: the DJ(s) were excellent, b: drinks were delicious, c: doorperson service 100% and d: Positive attitude equated to positive vibes. Get your arse on the dancefloor now. I’ll be proud to show off to my future self when I look back at all my dance moves on my insta posts.

Repurposing and sustainability.
Call it capsule dressing, vintage buys or frugal purchases, but I’ve noticed that fashion has itself been reinvented. While we have trends that define a time in history, lately I see many era-specific items coordinated with current trends. Are people holding on and finding a new life for the clothes that they buy? I’ve seen some 80s cuts mixed with the minimalist linens of the 00’s teamed with flashes of metallic accessories. When I saw my sister last, she was wearing an amazing cotton top that had been made from a vintage tablecloth. Not only was the workmanship beautiful, but the message behind don’t refuse to reuse was clear and simple. Check out Honest Studios in Fitzroy, VIC.
As a nod to positive vibrations.
There seems to be another few As in the air; alignment, abundance and admiration. Some key wordings to get your groove on, get started and keep your eyes open. With so many horrible things happening in the world, my little contribution to a bit of goodness has to start with a good attitude.
Happy 2024 everyone!
