I wish I could say that hitting up Budapest solo was a calculated move, but honestly, I just followed my feet – they have a habit of taking me to the coolest spots! Budapest, this architectural diva draped in history, was my playground. While everyone's queuing up at the tourist hotspots, I dove headfirst into the city's secret nooks and crannies.

So much variety, too cool

Budapest's skyline isn't just a view; it's a theatre show with buildings boasting about their legendary pasts. The Buda Castle? I strutted around like I owned the place, soaking in views that Instagram dreams are made of. But the real city is in those sneaky alleys and tucked-away corners. Szimpla Kert? – picture a mad artist’s studio, throw in some funky déco. Venture further into the Jewish Quarter, and you'll discover these hidden spots where the streets are alive with art, quirky cafes, and shops like Printa Design Shop and my favourite fashion designer Nubu that are a ‘vibe check’ on their own.

Cuisine fit for one

Solo travel here isn’t just about checking off landmarks; it’s a course in culture The Great Market Hall is a feast for the senses. I could practically taste the stories floating in the air and the aroma of those heavenly Hungarian delicacies. While I metaphorically ate at each stall, one’s visit to Hungary goes beyond the Goulash, Langos (Hungarian Flatbread) and Kurtos Kalacs (which is a delicious 'Chimmeny Cake'). Still, it’s a place like 21 Restaurant where authentic Hungarian cuisine such as Hortobagy Pancakes with sour cream and paprika sauceis a feast all on its own. If you are a foodie like me, there is a taste for everyone in the most unexpected places, take yourself off the tourist trap, food and coffee (at My LIttle Melbourne) is delicious at a fraction of the cost. No wonder people lined up at the traditional homemade dishes in the Shopping Centre instead of opting for one of the fast food giants.

Be like a local

Beyond the sightseeing and snapping selfies, Budapest offers something deeper. Sitting by the Danube as the sun dips low, it's like a date with yourself. Time to reflect, time to connect with the city’s soul, and maybe, just maybe, uncover a bit more about yourself along the way. I purchased a monthly ticket ($50AUD) which allowed me to travel on the Metro, Bus and Tram system. If not one of the best in Europe, on time, clean and so connected, one can travel around all of Budapest and its surrounds quickly and efficiently. One of my favourite things was to get on a random tram to hop off in an unfamiliar part of the city to just wander, watch and take in the city’s personality.

Surprise yourself

Thermal Baths that are frequented by the locals such as Lukacs and Rudas are the best way to wind down after a day of walking before an after-dinner cocktail at Leo Rooftop Bar with its delish and divine views of the Chain Bridge across the Danube towards Pest. Diving into Budapest solo is like unlocking a treasure chest. From those picture-perfect postcard scenes to the undercover gems, this city's got surprises for every intrepid traveller. So, pack your curiosity, leave your inhibitions at the airport, and dive headfirst into Budapest’s heart. It’s not just solo travel; it’s a pass to a city that inspires like no other!
