An open letter to my offspring
To the millennials and the something i-generation, I'm (we are all) learning from you.
We know you’ve got it tough. With the earth overpopulated, bleaker employment opportunities, global warming, a lack of housing, infrastructure, overcrowded cities, tsunamis, racial hatred, gender inequality – oh yes and this pandemic that’s shut down borders and reduced the chances of anyone enjoying young adulthood, we have to hand it to you, you are still an optimistic crowd, with a greater aversion to risk, to jump in all guns blazing, to take a chance. I look at you and wonder where did this strength come from. Well maybe you inherited a little from me and your ancestral lineage, and from evolutionary fight or flight, I would imagine.
But I love that you challenge everything, even me. We don’t know it all, but we know from our experience. And our experiences are different to yours.
If you see me glassy-eyed as I listen to your story, it's not that I'm spaced out, it's because I'm astounded at your intellect, the way you search for all the answers, not allowing just one opinion to rule your world. In a time where information is digested in a nanosecond.
I know you’re going to be okay. You may stuff up now and then, but don’t we all? I know we dodged far more bullets than your generation, we were too busy looking in the mirror, while you are just as busy looking over the crowds. So if you catch us staring, it's not because we're judging, it's because we are just amazed.
