Today ends the first week of officially working from home. And I feel fortunate that the organisation I work for, gave us this option, in order to keep ourselves and everyone around us safe. In our home, the kiddos have access to online learning, I’ve structured a pretty good work plan and the cat is happy that she gets to stay indoors. I know some people find having to stay indoors against their will (introverts no need to put down your book), but I’m going to relish this time!

I see an opportunity in every situation. It’s very sad that there will be thousands of people ‘stood down’ or ‘let go’, but now is the time for innovation, for businesses to work differently. The online world will burst with new ideas, people will be forced to outsource and If anyone will benefit from this horrendous situation, it’s the farmers and agricultural community. I read this week that a hen farmer has sold all their egg laying hens. More people are welcoming the feathered pets into their backyards for the want of fresh eggs daily. Companies who produce portable vegetable patches have sold out. Dare I say people are going back to basics? That food grown in your own backyard will become the norm? And I call out to regional weekenders, entice the city loving occupants with a sweet deal in the future if they organise now. Pull out those organic cookbooks and start experimenting, we now have the time. Which is why I’m not FOMO about FOMO!

This week I did things differently and I loved it. While it’s important to keep to a schedule when working from home, like getting up at the same time, showering, dressing (in something other than you pyjamas) and have breakfast as if you are heading out the door, there is a sense of more time to do some other things as well. I contacted the friends for a FaceTime coffee, others hooked into Zoom and had a six-way online, I forced my youngest to run around the park, practiced #socialdistancing in the field and baked a few gluten free cakes with only the ingredients I had in the pantry. As I scour Pinterest and Insta for inspiration, the lists are getting endless.

Now that I have an untimed date with a place called ‘four walls’ I’m going to: go through my books in my little library, pull out the old photo albums, get my hands dirty in the garden, get all my bills up to date, have a good hard look at the pantry, write long hand letters and send them by snail mail. Create online photo albums, finish my book, keep blog up to date, write a short story a week, connect with friends from long time ago, diffuse each room with your favourite scent, play board games, learn how to play Bridge, get on the phone with family OS. Design my WFH wardrobe. Get into Yoga online. Cook those meals that takes ages. Do an online course. Take a break from makeup, I’ll nourish my skin with homemade masks instead. Keep healthy, keep sane, send those emails, join that Facebook group. Drink lots of protein rich smoothies, bake your own snacks.

With all this going on, I have no time for FOMO.
