In the last week I visited two new rooftop bars. One because its birthday month and doing something different on your special day is definitely Joie de vivre and the second, well, we don’t need an excuse for a midweek beverage other than for a girlfriend catchup and connect. With the many bars on offer around this beautiful city, why does the prospect of sitting outside in the fresh air, above the commuters on the ground watching the sunset make me want to push everyone aside as I run for the elevator?

Hmmm.

Is it the Social interaction? Or the psychological appeal of open-air environments and their impact on social interactions? What about the role of architectural innovation in urban landscapes? I wonder what the interior architect's mood board looked like during the design process at my recent Japanese-inspired haunt. It was both warm and cozy, and cool and Japandi at the same time.

Or is it simply, because one is both outside and inside.

For me, its not the clientele that lures me up (other than the present company excepted), but the idea that we’re not closed in. It seems the more crowded the city, the more we seek the higher ground. While sipping my Gin Sour I got a glimpse into life 60 metres above the pavement and looked into offices and hotel rooms with their windows open, curtains flapping in the breeze. A room attendant fluffed several lounge cushions. A fellow hunched over the photocopy machine, a pair of pigeons canoodling on the ledge. The Apple store was packed with students, the sun setting over the bridge.

Is the lure an Inst-worthy requirement? Or the fascination to see and observe, while most likely being seen and observed at the same time.

I mean it's just another bar in the sky right?

Or does the sensation tap into biophilia -  the innate human love for nature - because even in an urban setting, feeling the sky above triggers a primal sense of peace. Maybe I just need a place to escape with all that's happening way down there…

Try next time you’re in town:

  1. 1-Altitude – Singapore.

  2. CIRQ Bar & Lounge - Sydney

  3. Netil360 - London

  4. Joji – Sydney

  5. Leo Rooftop – Budapest
