mum and me

I've been flicking through photos of my youth of late. And as I give thanks to all of the strong women in history and in my own family, one in particular is my mum. I was (and still am her everything) She endured a not-so-happy childhood, a not-so-happy relationship with her parents and a not-so-happy first marriage. But in every photo we have together, I'm in her arms, she's smiling, And whilst we are conscious of giving thanks to our mothers for their support, I'm giving thanks on this day for the strength that was instilled in me from a very early age. Strong women are predominant in our family (and as such, I've also married into a family with strong women)."Remember to always be financially responsible for yourself" she would say,"Don't rely on anyone but yourself, not even me""You can do whatever you want""There are two types of women, those with looks and those with brains" and I daresay, mum you did say to me "and looks fade, so thank goodness you're smart!"Reader please note, this in no way made me think any less of myself physically, I know her point was that having a strong sense of internal self was more important than the exterior package! And as they say, you are the product of your surroundings, but also the product of the people in your inner sanctum. In this case, the women/sisters in my life. I've always had great, opinionated, beautiful, funny, clever, intelligent, thoughtful, idealistic and courageous women around me. I've had the capacity to work with women in business, colleagues who understand what its like in corporate life. Women who have started businesses which led them to incredible careers, to women who juggled work and positive motherhood, who supported their partners, who chased their own dreams. And a special nod to my partners mother. Another strong women who defied the odds, who ran from political persecution, I don't think I could ever even understand what that would ever feel like.On this International Women's Day 2020, five things I've noticed

  1. Women genetically are different, its what constitutes the universal balance

  2. Women by nature are nurturer's, it's why there is so many misconceptions in the world.

  3. Women are pretty tough when it comes to giving birth to a watermelon size human being

  4. We can juggle almost everything, at the same time, always

  5. I'm thankful that I was raised by a compassionate and resilient strong woman
